Following our collaboration with Copenhagen based Studio Arhoj, we share our five favorite city spots across the Danish capital - spanning food, drink, art, entertainment and shopping.

Gao Dumpling Bar

Gao is Copenhagen’s first ever dumpling bar, blending a vibrant Hong Kong colour palette with Scandi simplicity, creating a bridge between both cultures. Find Gao in a cosy Nørrebro basement space, with bright neon signs (one’s shaped like a dumpling) plus rainbow melamine plates and chopsticks. Offering four different kinds of handmade dumplings (two being vegan) we had an absolute feast and ordered them all, adding hot and cold side salads and some delicious deep fried tofu. Drool.

Mikkeller & Friends

This neighbourhood Nørrebro bar is craft beer lovers heaven, serving their own well-loved, tasty Mikkeller brews plus 40 taps with guest beers from micro-breweries around the world (hence the ‘& friends’). We love Mikkeller Art Director Keith Shore’s illustrations, with icons Henry and Sally on beer glasses, cans & bottles, on the walls and in neon above the door. He says “They are our hop sniffing, long-nosed lovers. Henry has his shapely hat, and Sally has her bubbly hairdo”. We tried a Berliner Weisse, brewed with tart red raspberries and coffee notes… weird but wonderful, just how we like it.

Tivoli Gardens

Right in the centre of Copenhagen, Tivoli is the second oldest amusement park in the world, having opened in 1843 and allegedly inspiring Walt Disney to create Disneyland. Outside of the new and antique rides (Tivoli is home to a century-old rollercoaster) you can walk around the gardens, lakes, and outside stages which host Friday night concerts and fireworks displays. With themed seasons over Christmas, Halloween and Winter, we visited during the Easter season with plenty of bonnets and bows, spring blooms and farmyard animal sculptures. As the sun set, the gardens were lit up by hundreds of brightly coloured lamps, lanterns and fairy lights. Spotting a Peacock wandering on the walls of a twinkling pavillion, it was hard not to be won over by whimsy at Tivoli.

Studio Arhoj Design Store

Our favourite spot for shopping in Copenhagen is of course our recent collaborator Studio Arhoj’s design store. Founder Anders Arhoj describes it as “bright, fun, too much, visually intense, messy, cozy and a place where people like to spend time, hang out and look at our products as well as observe us make them”. Located in Islands Brygge, a quiet harbour front district close to water, the design store is housed in an old warehouse, filled with natural light. The shop is part of the studio space, so whilst browsing you can watch the magic happen, as the production team glaze and potters throw at the wheel. Clusters of little ceramic ghosts and rows of rainbow glazed cups, bowls, plates and vases are all arranged in perfect colour stories. You can also get your hands on weird one-offs and limited edition pieces, as well as prints, studio designed wrapping paper, plants, pens & pencils and original artwork by Anders Arhoj. Safe to say, we were like kids in a ceramic candy store.

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

Lose yourself in 3500 years of history and discover the very unique collection of Carlsberg founder Carl Jacobsen’s Egyptian, Greek, Etruscan and Roman art. We’d recommend a good two hours to meander through the many rooms of sculptures, allowing plenty of time to practice your best Venus pose, count the many of missing noses on sculptures or get into a heated debate about Ancient Aliens conspiracy theories (if, like us, you’ve watched too much Blaze). And once you’ve finished you can sit down, relax and watch the world go by in the idyllic setting of the museum courtyard complete with palm trees and fishes swimming in fountains. Oh and it’s a mere 1 minute walk from our other recommendation Tivoli Gardens so you can tick two things off the list in a day. Easy peasy.
